From Metrics to Meaning: Using Advanced Analytics to Evaluate Scientific Exchange

09:55 – 10:40, Wednesday 28 January 2026

Measuring the impact of scientific exchange offers significant benefits for pharmaceutical companies, yet many remain in the dark because their content is not designed for performance tracking at the point of publication. Without the right infrastructure, it is difficult to assess whether materials truly resonate with key stakeholders or contribute to meaningful scientific exchange.

Advanced analytics now make it possible to go far beyond traditional metrics, providing insights into how scientific content is consumed, shared, and perceived across audiences. Persistent identifiers such as DOIs are a crucial enabler of this process, allowing content to be linked with stakeholder-specific engagement data, sentiment signals, and usage patterns that reveal a fuller picture of communication impact.

This workshop will introduce participants to the possibilities of advanced analytics in scientific exchange. Through case-based examples, the session will explore how metrics such as audience segmentation (clinicians, policymakers, patients), sentiment analysis, and geographic reach can illuminate patterns of engagement. Participants will also discuss how to integrate these methods into strategy and planning at different points in the product lifecycle – from launch preparation through to ongoing evaluation of stakeholder engagement.

By the end, attendees will have practical knowledge of how to set up content for tracking and apply advanced data-driven insights, with DOI tagging highlighted as a key step to unlocking these capabilities.

Objectives

  • Understand the role of advanced analytics in scientific exchange – Gain awareness of how persistent identifiers such as DOIs enable deeper measurement of engagement, sentiment, and reach across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Apply metrics across the product lifecycle – Learn how to integrate content performance tracking into pre-launch planning, peri-launch execution, and post-launch evaluation to inform strategy and optimize engagement.
  • Critically assess and apply insights – Develop the ability to distinguish between data that generates actionable improvements in content strategy versus metrics that add noise, and explore best practices for using analytics to align scientific content with HCP and patient needs.

The Charleston Conference is an informal annual gathering of librarians, publishers, electronic resource managers, consultants, and vendors of library materials in Charleston, SC, in November, to discuss issues of importance to the library and scholarly publishing landscape. It is designed to be a collegial gathering of individuals from different areas who discuss the same issues in a non-threatening, friendly, and highly informal environment. Presidents of companies discuss and debate with library directors, acquisitions librarians, reference librarians, serials librarians, collection development librarians, and many, many others. Begun in 1980, the Charleston Conference has grown from 20 participants in 1980 to almost 2,500 in 2023.

Digital Science is proud to be exhibiting at this year’s vendor showcase taking place on November 4 from 10:00am to 5:30pm at the Charleston Gaillard Center. Stop by Booth 4 to learn more about our products.

Andrew Mckenna-Foster, Head of Pre-Sales Solutions – Academic/Publisher, will be hosting a session on November 5 at 2:40pm in Salon 2 of the Gaillard Center. Please see details of his session below:

Title: Future-Proofing Research Support with Digital Science: A Unified Approach for Librarians and Administrators

Description: The digital environment is transforming how we conduct and share research. The systems we use to support research must evolve to keep pace. In this talk we will show how three powerful tools—Altmetric, Dimensions, and Figshare—work together to future-proof and transform research support from a manual, siloed process into a dynamic, connected workflow.

Dimensions is a linked research database that includes publication, grant, clinical trial, and patent data, with powerful dashboards and APIs for analyzing funding and research output. It enables data-driven analysis and strategic business insights. Altmetric tracks the real-time digital attention research receives from news, social media, policy, and blogs, offering a broader view of a project’s reach and impact beyond academia. Figshare is a repository that provides a discoverable home for all research outputs, from all disciplines, giving visibility to works outside traditional publishing so that they can be tracked by solutions like Dimensions and Altmetric.

While each of these platforms is powerful on its own, when used together they bring adaptability and agility to your research infrastructure, supporting everyone from researchers to administrators. Additionally, these platforms are all part of Digital Science and institutions benefit from cross platform integrations, easier vendor management, and a better overall user experience.

Join us to see examples of how Dimensions, Altmetric and Figshare can be used together to support your institution’s research.

Don’t miss our keynote “AI and the Perpetual Research Cycle: Accelerating Drug Discovery through Enhanced Literature Analysis” by Mark Hahnel, Vice President of Open Research, Digital Science, at 08:30 – 09:00AM.

Abstract:

This talk explores the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the research lifecycle, with a focus on its application in accelerating drug discovery. It introduces the concept of the “Perpetual Research Cycle,” where AI facilitates the continuous flow from data to papers and knowledge, driving innovation in scientific research. The discussion will highlight how AI tools enhance critical stages of this cycle, particularly in literature analysis and review, which are fundamental to drug discovery.

The presentation will showcase specific AI-driven solutions that streamline systematic literature reviews, enable continuous monitoring of relevant publications, and enhance the precision and efficiency of data extraction from scientific literature. By automating and accelerating these processes, AI empowers researchers to derive deeper insights from vast amounts of scientific data, ultimately leading to faster and more effective drug discovery. The talk will also address key considerations for responsible AI implementation in research, ensuring trust, accuracy, and reliability in the quest for new therapies.

Accelerate AI initiatives with a data-centric Enterprise (Information) Architecture

From documents to data-driven insights

Today’s Enterprise (Information) Architecture solutions lack the agility needed to accelerate AI initiatives. They do not deliver the required transparency over an organization’s information landscape, information architecture and data journeys, and fail to connect business needs to IT changes.

Imagine what your organization could accomplish with a complete and comprehensive digital representation of its entire IT structure, all centered around the data that is available in these systems. This would include mapping information (such as the applications and physical systems used for the business), linking to business processes, as well as roles, departments and the individuals who fill them.

In this session, we will explore how the implementation of a data-driven Enterprise (Information) Architecture can enable you to deliver the required transparency across business and IT, simplify data discovery, and, ultimately, support AI initiatives. As such, this will help your organization transition from mere systems documentation to an enterprise-wide semantic layer, weaving together:

  • Business glossaries
  • Data catalogs
  • Governance risk and compliance
  • Configuration and service management
  • Enterprise architecture repository
  • API and streaming service publishing
  • And much more!

We will dive into how this approach will enable all stakeholders, from management and business users to data owners, data stewards and IT, to participate in a collaborative process, and will discuss how this approach can be scaled to an enterprise-wide practice.

Join us to learn why building a semantic layer for your Enterprise Information Architecture is an integral part of becoming data-centric and AI-ready!
